Silverdale Holiday Camp – The First 100 Years, by Frances McNeil

Meticulously researched and packed with personal recollections and memories, photographs and original reports and statistics, this book is a fascinating and endearing portrait of the ‘Leeds Poor Children’s Holiday Camp’ and the experiences of the children who have visited over the first 100 years.

The author, Frances McNeil, a ‘Silverdaler’ herself, has written extensively for theatre, radio and television. Her novel Somewhere behind the Morning, capturing lives in working class Leeds around the time of the First World War, is published by Orion. The central character in Sixpence in Her Shoe (Orion, August 2006) makes a journey from Leeds to Morecombe Bay in the late 1920s.

Windyridge
A Classic Yorkshire Novel, by Willie Riley with new intro David M Copeland

David Copeland, the author who has written the introduction to William Riley's republished book, 'Windyridge', was at Silverdale Holiday Centre for Civic Day and he has asked me to amend our entry on the website regarding the book. If possible, could the following wording be added to the book page for information, please:

William Riley, the author of Windyridge, lived at Silverdale for many years and became acquainted with Helen Currer Briggs who was one of the founding members of this charity. William Riley was a great supporter of this charity and was secretary of the local Silverdale Committee for over 30 years. The Silverdale Committee was formed to help support Silverdale Holiday Centre by raising funds and resources to help the children and to maintain the building. The committee is still in existence and its members continue to work extremely hard to support the charity.

David Copeland realised the connection between William Riley and Leeds Children's Charity from his research into the life of the author, and has very generously donated half the royalties from the sale of the book to the charity. The trustees are very grateful for this benevolence.
